Bangkok: The Department of Highways is urgently coordinating with relevant agencies to repair the subsidence on Rama 2 Road. The Department of Highways (DOH) clarified that a road subsidence occurred on Rama 2 Road, kilometer 29+350, due to a broken water pipe. They are urgently coordinating with relevant agencies to carry out repairs.
According to Thai News Agency, the road collapse incident was caused by a broken water pipe, resulting in a pothole on the road surface of the Rama 2 Road parallel road, inbound to Bangkok. The incident occurred at approximately 6:30 AM on January 17, 2026, at kilometer 29+350 on the inbound parallel road. One pickup truck belonging to a member of the public was damaged. Initially, there were no reports of injuries or fatalities.
Upon inspection, it was found that the area in question was where the Samut Sakhon Municipal Waterworks Department had excavated the road surface to install a 1,000-millimeter diameter water pipe and had since compacted and restored the road surface. Subsequently, a water pipe burst, causing the road surface in that area to collapse.
The Department of Highways has dispatched officers to the area to manage traffic and ensure the safety of road users. They are also coordinating with officials from the Samut Sakhon Municipality, who have now arrived at the site to inspect and resolve the situation.
The Department of Highways requests cooperation in temporarily avoiding the area. Vehicles from the parallel road can use the detour to access the main lane at kilometer 29+600.
