Bangkok: One person has been arrested for spraying paint over artwork on Charoen Krung 30, causing damage. The Bangkok governor revealed that police have arrested one person for spray-painting over a famous artist’s artwork in Soi Charoen Krung 30, causing damage. The artwork, which was just unveiled last week, took about 7-10 days to complete.
According to Thai News Agency, Bangkok Governor Chadchart Sittipunt personally visited the area after being informed that a mural by a renowned artist in Soi Charoen Krung 30 had been damaged by graffiti. The mural was discovered to have been covered in paint since Friday night.
The artwork, one of the works by Spanish artist Carolina Adan Caro, took about 7-10 days to complete and was unveiled last week as part of the ‘Krung Thep Creative Streets’ event, a collaboration between the European Union embassies in Thailand on the occasion of European Heritage Day 2025. The intended painting was recently destroyed by uncreative people.
The governor expressed his regret at the artist’s beautiful painting, which was then attacked with something he didn’t understand. While graffiti groups call themselves a form of art, they can’t do this. It’s not just messy, but the paintings have owners, damaging the artist’s efforts. They also believe the graffiti is considered property. The artist urged the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration to take care of the situation. He added that this is illegal, and he shouldn’t expect to escape the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration’s notice. CCTV footage clearly captured the three perpetrators. One has been apprehended and the crime is currently under investigation for property damage, as it is unusable and causes damage. The penalty is three years in prison and a 60,000 baht fine.
The governor also emphasized that one person has been arrested. He thanked the police for their swift arrest, but added that further investigation is needed. He added that everyone is a co-owner of this work. He urged them to take care of the situation. If anyone wishes to destroy it, please stop. If you wish to spray, he will find a wall for you, provided the owner has given permission. He urged the police to be serious about this, not just about cleanliness, but also about destroying city property.
