Berlin: A VAR referee in the Germany-Cura§ao game was accused of making a racist gesture. Australian referee Sean Evans, officiating at the 2026 World Cup, found himself at the center of controversy after being accused of making a racist gesture during a live broadcast that cut to the VAR room. This incident occurred during Germany's 7-1 victory over Cura§ao.
According to Thai News Agency, Evans was seen touching his thumb and index finger together while extending his other fingers. Historically, this gesture has been interpreted as a sign of "agreement." However, it has recently been adopted as a symbol of "white power" by some racist extremists. The three extended fingers can represent the letter W for "White," while the thumb and index finger can form the letter P for "Power."
A FIFA spokesperson acknowledged awareness of the incident but declined to comment further on the matter.
