Veterans Rally Behind Abhisit at Democrat Party Leadership Meeting

Bangkok: The Democrat Party was abuzz with activity as it convened its general meeting to elect a new party leader and executive committee. Many veteran members showed their support for Abhisit Vejjajiva as the prospective leader. Notably absent from the meeting was Chalermchai Sri-on, while others expressed their solidarity with Mark, another leadership candidate, by presenting him with roses. In a heartfelt declaration, Abhisit stated, “My heart has never left,” when questioned by the media about his sentiments during this pivotal moment.

According to Thai News Agency, the extraordinary general meeting commenced at 9:30 a.m., with former MPs who had resigned making their return to partake in the proceedings. Abhisit, a candidate for the party leadership, arrived early at 8:35 a.m., accompanied by members of the new executive committee, including Ms. Kardee Leowpairoj, an expert in futures and digital assets; Pol. Lt. Col. Pongsakorn Kwanmuang, the party spokesperson; and Mr. Weeraphong Prapha, the former Thai Trade Representative, who have all joined the party.

Upon his arrival at the meeting room, Abhisit was warmly greeted by party members, both seasoned and new, including representatives from the Ramkhamhaeng University Student Organization, who presented him with roses as a symbol of encouragement. Many members also embraced him, reinforcing their backing for his leadership candidacy.

Responding to reporters’ inquiries about his return to the Democrat Party, Abhisit expressed that his commitment to the party had remained unwavering.

During the meeting, Abhisit interacted with various party members and former leaders, such as Satit Wongnongtoey, Sakolthee Phattiyakul, Korn Chatikavanij, and Nipit Intarasombat. Enthusiastic members held up signs within the meeting room, advocating for Abhisit Vejjajiva to assume the role of party leader.

Meanwhile, Mr. Chuan Leekpai, a party-list MP, and his son, Mr. Surabot Leekpai, a former party-list MP, took time to visit the “Democrat People” painting exhibition, showcasing works by Chuan Leekpai. Mr. Surabot commended the artwork, noting the beauty of the lines.

In contrast, Chalermchai Sri-on, the former party leader, exited the meeting, while acting party secretary-general Decha Isara Khaothong was in attendance. It was also observed that several former Democrat Party members from Abhisit’s previous administration have reapplied for party membership, contributing to the vibrant atmosphere of the meeting.
