Bangkok: Village security guards in Chachoengsao Province fatally shot three migrant workers after a confrontation over loud music and drinking escalated into violence. The incident occurred in Nong Nam Dam Village, Moo 9, Ko Khanun Subdistrict, Phanom Sarakham District, prompting a police investigation into the tragic event.
According to Thai News Agency, the confrontation began when village security officers attempted to warn a group of around 20 migrant workers, all from Myanmar, to lower their music and refrain from using high beams. The workers reportedly ignored the warnings and instead turned aggressive, grabbing knives and chasing after the guards. In the ensuing chaos, security officer Mr. Teeraphat, aged 24, fired his weapon, claiming self-defense as the workers allegedly assaulted his colleague with a bottle and a knife.
The Phanom Sarakham Police Station received notification of the incident at 11:30 PM, leading officers, forensic investigators, and rescue units to rush to the scene. Three individuals were found dead, each with 3-4 gunshot wounds, and more than 16 shell casings were recovered. The deceased migrant workers have not yet been identified. Mr. Pichai, another individual involved, was seriously injured in the altercation and is currently receiving medical treatment at Phanom Sarakham Hospital.
During the police questioning, Mr. Teerapat described the escalation of the conflict. After the initial warning, the situation deteriorated into a physical altercation, with one of his friends getting struck on the head with a bottle. Despite firing a warning shot, the migrant workers continued their assault, leading him to act in self-defense as a group of them allegedly advanced on him with knives. The local police are continuing their investigation to gather all necessary details surrounding the incident.
