Bangkok: The Ministry of Culture, in collaboration with its network, is organizing "Vipassana for All" as a merit-making act for the 99th birthday of the Supreme Patriarch. On the auspicious occasion of His Holiness Somdej Phra Ariyavongsakhatayan, the Supreme Patriarch of Thailand, reaching his 99th birthday on June 26, 2026, a momentous event marking his centennial, the government has organized celebrations to honor His Holiness with the utmost respect and cooperation from all sectors.
According to Thai News Agency, Ms. Sabida Thaiseth, Minister of Culture, revealed that the Department of Religious Affairs, Ministry of Culture, in collaboration with the Sangha, Buddhist organizations, government agencies, the private sector, and networks of meditation centers nationwide, will organize the "Vipassana for All" activities from June to August 2026. These activities are held to honor the Supreme Patriarch and provide opportunities for children, youth, and people of all ages to learn and practice meditation correctly. The initiative aims to promote human potential development through mindfulness and meditation, a fundamental basis for physical and mental well-being. It helps strengthen emotional resilience, reduce stress, improve analytical thinking and decision-making abilities, and foster mindful living. Furthermore, it promotes the application of Buddhist principles in daily life, leading to the creation of warm families, strong communities, and a sustainable virtuous society.
Promoting Buddhist practice develops the nation's spiritual capital, which is a crucial foundation for improving the quality of both people and society. This aligns with the Ministry of Culture's policy under the concept of "Empowering Culture for Better Living," which aims to leverage religious and cultural capital as a creative force for balanced national development.
The Minister of Culture further stated that the integrated activities will be conducted in collaboration with a network of 10 model meditation centers and Buddhist organizations. These include: in Bangkok, Wat Thammamongkol Thaoboonnontaviharn, Wat Mahathat Yuwarajrangsrit, the Young Buddhist Association of Thailand under Royal Patronage, and the Buddhist Association of Thailand under Royal Patronage; and in the regions, the Phra Barami Meditation Hall in Chachoengsao Province, Wat Rampoeng (Tapotharam) in Chiang Mai Province, Wat Pa Tham Wua in Mae Hong Son Province, Bodhidharma±anasathan in Songkhla Province, Wat Chantharam (Tha Sung) in Uthai Thani Province, and Wat Nong Pa Phong in Ubon Ratchathani Province, as well as participating meditation centers nationwide.
The Department of Religious Affairs, Ministry of Culture, aims for this network of meditation centers to be a key mechanism in expanding opportunities for learning meditation and Vipassana to people in all regions, while also elevating Thailand to become an international center for meditation learning and mental development, thereby helping to create a positive image for the country.
A survey revealed that there are currently over 2,800 meditation centers within temples nationwide, with a continuous stream of participants from both Thailand and abroad. The Department of Religious Affairs, in collaboration with its network partners, has therefore created a website to compile information on these meditation centers. This website facilitates the search and registration of interested individuals to participate in meditation retreats according to their needs, dates, times, and locations. In addition to promoting spiritual development, this initiative also supports religious tourism and contributes positively to the national economy.
Furthermore, the Department of Religious Affairs, Ministry of Culture, has integrated its cooperation with the Sangha and provincial cultural offices nationwide to prepare Buddhist activities to offer merit to His Holiness the Supreme Patriarch. These include central events such as chanting of Buddhist scriptures and alms-giving ceremonies at the Wisit Cultural Building, Ministry of Culture, Bangkok, and regional activities tailored to the specific context of each province. This aims to provide opportunities for Buddhists to express their gratitude and reverence to the Supreme Patriarch, while simultaneously promoting Buddhism, fostering morality and ethics, and cultivating a positive force in Thai society. This will ultimately lead to lasting peace, unity, and prosperity.
