Wan Nor to Review Legal Authority Over Petition to Suspend Senators

Bangkok: Mr. Wan Muhammad Noor Matha, the President of the House of Representatives, announced his intention to consult with the legal department following a petition urging the president of the parliament to request the Constitutional Court to suspend senators from performing their duties. The issue revolves around a collusion investigation related to the selection process of senators, and the petition suggests it is within the Senate President’s authority to include this matter in the agenda of an extraordinary session.

According to Thai News Agency, Mr. Wan Muhammad Noor Matha clarified that the request for senators to cease their duties should have been directed to the President of the Senate. However, since the petition was submitted to him, it implies that he holds a position within the National Assembly. Consequently, his legal advisory team must evaluate the petition’s content to determine whether it falls within the scope of the President of the National Assembly’s authority to address the Constitutional Court on this matter.

Regarding the potential impact of this petition on the selection of the independent organization committee, Mr. Wan Muhammad Noor stated that it is up to the Senate meeting to decide if they can proceed in accordance with their regulations. He emphasized that it is the Senate President’s responsibility to decide which issues to address during the extraordinary session. Members of the Senate are entitled to express or discuss their opinions as part of their duties. He refrained from delving into the specifics of the Senate’s role, noting that it operates under its own regulations, and the Senate President must independently consider this issue.
