Bangkok: Mr. Wan Muhammad Noor Matha, President of the House of Representatives, has condemned the recent attack in Songkhla Province, where a young monk was shot dead and another injured. The incident occurred when unknown assailants ambushed a group of monks and novices collecting alms at Wat Kuhra, Saba Yoi District.
According to Thai News Agency, the attack has sparked significant concern, with Mr. Wan emphasizing the profound impact such violence has on religious communities. He called on the government to expedite the arrest and prosecution of those responsible, highlighting the necessity of protecting religious sentiments to prevent further unrest. Mr. Wan stressed that effective resolution of religiously motivated violence is crucial to maintaining public peace.
Mr. Wan addressed the broader issue of southern violence, acknowledging the complexity of the situation. He urged comprehensive solutions that encompass education, the economy, justice, and social cohesion. The ongoing conflict in the southern provinces, he noted, affects not only local communities but the entire nation, including its tourism and investment sectors. Therefore, he encouraged the government to prioritize these issues for the betterment of Thailand.
In response to questions about current government strategies, Mr. Wan expressed doubts about their effectiveness, suggesting that recent events indicate a need for reassessment. He mentioned a forthcoming visit by Deputy Prime Minister and Defense Minister Phumtham Wechayachai, along with the Southern Border Provinces Administrative Center (SBPAC), to the southern border provinces on April 26-27. This visit aims to gather insights and evaluate the situation to develop improved strategies for peace and stability in the region.
