Bangkok: The Department of Rail Transport is actively addressing a water leakage incident that occurred in the underground tunnel of the Purple Line. Despite the initial alarm, no structural collapse has been observed in nearby buildings as authorities continue to monitor the situation closely.
According to Thai News Agency, Mr. Pichet Kunathamarak, Director-General of the Department of Rail Transport, led an inspection of the water ingress in the Purple Line's tunnel, specifically in the southbound section near the end of Prachathipok Road. This area is part of Contract 4, involving the design and construction of the tunnel and underground stations, with Unique Engineering and Construction Public Company Limited as the contractor.
Mr. Pichet reported that on the morning of July 8, 2026, groundwater began leaking into an unfinished manhole, causing flooding as the water level was significantly higher than the tunnel. The contractor increased the pumping rate to manage the situation and initiated grouting to stabilize the area. By evening, the situation was under control, and the pumping rate was reduced while grouting continued around the manhole.
Further inspections revealed a decrease in water leakage, with continuous efforts to maintain water pressure balance. No significant subsidence was detected in nearby buildings, although an abandoned building had prior subsidence issues. The Ministry of Transport has instructed ongoing monitoring and a thorough investigation into the cause, ensuring all operations adhere to safety standards for public confidence.
