Weerayuth Criticizes Anutin’s Government for Ineffective Oil Crisis Management

Bangkok: "Weerayuth" has criticized the government under Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul for its inadequate policies, stating that they fail to keep pace with the public's needs and have allowed the oil crisis to worsen.

According to Thai News Agency, Mr. Veerayut Kanchuchat, Deputy Leader of the People's Party and Member of Parliament, voiced his concerns during a debate on the Cabinet's policy statement. He highlighted the government's delayed response to the oil crisis in the Middle East, arguing that the administration was significantly behind in addressing critical issues such as oil hoarding and refining margins, which lagged by 3-5 weeks.

Mr. Veerayuth emphasized that the government's policy statement lacks a clear strategy for crisis management, treating the situation as if it were normal circumstances. He stressed the need for clear direction to help alleviate public anxiety and proposed measures to manage oil pricing and support vulnerable groups.

He criticized the absence of urgent policies seen during the Yingluck government's tenure in 2011, despite the current crisis being more severe. Mr. Veerayut suggested planning for a "worst-case scenario" if the conflict persists throughout 2026, affecting industries like tourism and agriculture.

The Deputy Leader recommended that the government declare a national mission to enhance Thailand's energy security. He proposed restructuring the energy sector, increasing renewable energy usage, and improving energy efficiency. He argued that changes require public cooperation, and policy-making must be both proactive and reactive.

Mr. Veerayuth pointed out that the current government's structure reflects a mix of "political bigwigs" and "technocrats," leading to indecisiveness and lack of principles. He cited the illegal hoarding of oil as an example of governance failures.

He warned against repeating past mistakes, like those seen during the COVID-19 crisis, urging for policies that ensure long-term stability and strength. Mr. Veerayuth concluded by urging the government to manage the country with a crisis mindset, implementing both reactive and proactive policies for a united and stronger Thailand.
