Bangkok:Thailand recently hosted the 86th World Gymnastics Congress, marking a significant achievement as the first Southeast Asian nation to do so. The event, held at the Grand Center Point Lumpini Hotel in Bangkok from October 4-5, saw participation from over 500 gymnastics executives representing 150 countries.
According to Thai News Agency, the congress was praised for showcasing Thailand's potential and soft power, with attendees expressing admiration and pledging to return. The hosting rights were granted to Thailand without competition, highlighting the global gymnastics community's confidence in the country's capabilities.
Rear Admiral Sarayut Pattanaprasert, President of the Gymnastics Association of Thailand, noted the economic benefits of the event, which brought in substantial revenue through sectors like hospitality and transportation. This aligns with Thailand's sports industry, which annually generates over 218 billion baht.
Additionally, the congress helped form "tourism ambassadors" from the participating nations, as many first-time visitors were impressed by Thailand's attractions and hospitality. The event also reinforced Thailand's international standing by serving as a platform for reviewing gymnastics rules and showcasing Thailand's organizational expertise.
The congress included a gala dinner featuring Thai cultural performances, such as the Khon dance and Thai drumming, which were praised by Mr. Morinari Watanabe, President of the World Gymnastics Federation, for their spectacular execution.
