Bangkok: September 22nd marks World Hematopoietic Stem Cell Donor Day, a critical event aimed at raising awareness and encouraging donations to aid patients with blood diseases. The National Blood Centre of the Thai Red Cross Society is spearheading the "Stepping into 25 Years with Stem Cell Hope" project throughout September 2026, providing opportunities for individuals to donate blood and register as stem cell donors across multiple locations in Bangkok and regional centers.
According to Thai News Agency, the initiative coincides with the altered date of World Marrow Donor Day, now recognized on September 22nd annually, established by the World Marrow Donor Association (WMDA). The day honors stem cell donors and celebrates the recruitment of volunteers critical to the life-saving process. Globally, 43,468,755 volunteers are registered, with over 35,000 patients annually awaiting transplants.
In Thailand, the National Blood Centre, designated by the Medical Council of Thailand, has been managing the "National Hematopoietic Stem Cell Bank" since 2002. The bank aims to match unrelated stem cell donors with patients, significantly boosting treatment success rates. Stem cell transplantation stands as a vital medical intervention, yet the probability of finding a matching donor is challenging, with a 1 in 4 chance among siblings and a mere 1 in 10,000 chance from unrelated donors. Although Thailand boasts 382,484 registered donors, only 851 have successfully donated stem cells, leaving 3,819 patients in need of transplants for conditions such as acute leukemia and thalassemia.
The initiative also sees collaboration from key medical institutions, including Chulalongkorn Hospital and Maharaj Nakorn Chiang Mai Hospital, among others, underscoring the importance of the mission. The 2026 campaign, themed "Stepping into 25 Years with Stem Cell Hope," seeks to reinforce the message that stem cells represent not just a treatment option, but a beacon of hope for new beginnings.
Throughout September, individuals aged 18-50, in good health, are encouraged to participate by donating blood and registering as stem cell donors at various centers including those in Chonburi and Khon Kaen. Donors will receive a commemorative t-shirt, and the campaign features activities such as a T-shirt design contest and the Hope Gallery Exhibition, showcasing stories of recovery and gratitude.
On World Stem Cell Donor Day, a photo session will capture the unified effort of the National Blood Center and its partners, celebrating 25 years of hope and progress in stem cell donation. The event highlights the collective strength and dedication necessary to offer patients a renewed chance at life.
