Bangkok: Professor Dr. Yotsanun Wongsawat, Deputy Prime Minister and Chairman of the Committee on Flood and Drought Prevention and Mitigation in Northern Thailand, has issued an urgent directive to the provinces of Nan, Phayao, and Lamphun. The directive, which calls for heightened flood warning levels and readiness of KA-32 bomb disposal units, aims to address potential flooding risks.
According to Thai News Agency, the urgent letter, No. MT 0608/W 14555, signed by Dr. Wongsawat, instructs the governors of the three provinces to prepare comprehensively for flood prevention and mitigation. This comes in response to the Meteorological Department's forecast of thunderstorms, heavy rainfall, and strong winds expected in August 2026, which pose risks of flash floods, landslides, and river overflows.
The committee has outlined eight key measures for immediate implementation. These include close monitoring and assessment of the situation, upgrading the early warning system for speed and accuracy, and preparing personnel and machinery, including a KA-32 disaster relief helicopter. The helicopter will be on standby for evacuations and delivery of relief supplies.
Temporary shelters must be equipped with necessary facilities, while continuous dissemination of information about water levels is required. An incident command center is to be established to expedite assistance for vulnerable groups. Additionally, recovery and relief efforts will be expedited, with coordination from the Ministry of Higher Education, Science, Research and Innovation (MHESI) to support flood responses and post-flood cleanup.
These measures are part of a broader strategy outlined in Prime Minister's Order No. 275/2569, aimed at effectively alleviating the impact of floods and droughts in the northern region of Thailand.
