Ban Phai: The abbot of a renowned temple in Ban Phai has agreed to disrobe after photos of him with a laywoman surfaced, stirring controversy and prompting action from religious authorities. The abbot acknowledged the authenticity of the photo, stating that it was taken three years ago.
According to Thai News Agency, following the emergence of the photo, the Sangha, the governing body for Buddhist monks, resolved that the abbot should disrobe within seven days and vacate the area immediately. The abbot complied with this directive, recently changing into casual attire including a gray t-shirt, black sweatpants, and a black cap. Reporters on the scene noted that he appeared emotional, with red eyes and tears, as he swiftly entered a waiting 4-door pickup truck.
The abbot admitted that the photo was indeed of him, confirming the incident’s occurrence three years prior. This development has drawn significant attention, highlighting the expectations placed on monastic figures and the consequences of personal actions within the religious community.
