Abhisit Sees Cambodian Mortar Fire as Minor Issue Amid Election Concerns

Bangkok: Abhisit Vejjajiva, Prime Minister candidate and leader of the Democrat Party, has addressed the recent incident involving the firing of a 40mm mortar from Cambodia into Thai territory, which he views as a secondary issue in the context of potential election postponement.

According to Thai News Agency, Abhisit commented on the situation along the Thai-Cambodian border, where a 40-millimeter grenade was fired onto Thai land. He emphasized the importance of employing foreign policy measures to ensure both sides adhere to the ceasefire agreement. Abhisit urged the government to consider using observers to prevent any actions that might threaten the ceasefire, such as the smuggling of weapons or personnel.

Abhisit expressed that the possibility of delaying the election, scheduled for February 8th, is secondary to preventing further conflict and losses. He highlighted the need for both countries to respect the ceasefire rules and suggested involving other parties to pressure Cambodia into compliance if necessary.

Regarding the use of national security and patriotism in political campaigns, Abhisit noted that each party is free to address issues as they see fit. He urged the public to consider facts and logic, emphasizing the importance of evaluating past actions and statements in the digital age to determine who is best suited to manage national security issues effectively, drawing parallels to a similar situation in 2011.
