Airports of Thailand Anticipates Over 4.11 Million Passengers for Chinese New Year 2026

Bangkok: Airports of Thailand Public Company Limited (AOT) is preparing for a significant surge in air traffic during the Chinese New Year period, forecasting over 4.11 million passengers across its six airports from February 13-22, 2026. This expected increase aligns with the ongoing recovery of the aviation and tourism sectors.

According to Thai News Agency, Ms. Paweena Chariyathitipong, President and CEO of AOT, outlined that the anticipated passenger numbers include approximately 2.6 million international travelers and 1.51 million domestic travelers. AOT is projecting around 24,847 flights, comprising 14,295 international flights and 10,552 domestic flights during this festive period. The six airports involved are Suvarnabhumi Airport, Don Mueang Airport, Chiang Mai Airport, Mae Fah Luang Chiang Rai Airport, Phuket Airport, and Hat Yai Airport.

Focusing on routes to China, AOT forecasts approximately 679,259 passengers, marking an 8.1% increase compared to the previous year, with around 4,447 flights, reflecting a 3.4% increase. Suvarnabhumi Airport is expected to experience the highest volume, handling around 444,255 passengers on routes to China, a 24.2% increase, and approximately 2,889 flights, a 20.5% rise as of February 4, 2026.

Ms. Paweena emphasized AOT's comprehensive preparation to handle the increased travel demand, prioritizing passenger convenience and safety. Efforts include providing interpreters for foreign passengers, particularly from China, and employing technology to minimize waiting times. Traffic management strategies are also in place to prevent congestion at airport entry and exit points.

In response to the Nipah virus, AOT has heightened screening and surveillance across its airports, in coordination with international disease control checkpoints. Measures include symptom observation, health screenings, and increased cleaning of common contact points. Medical personnel and equipment are ready to ensure public health safety.

To celebrate Chinese New Year, AOT's airports are hosting cultural activities such as peony and lion dances and Chinese calligraphy demonstrations, with terminals adorned to create a festive atmosphere.
