Anutin Criticizes Thanathorn Over Demands for Flood Compensation in Hat Yai

Bangkok: Anutin Charnvirakul, the Prime Minister and Minister of Interior, has criticized Thanathorn Juangroongruangkit for his demands regarding compensation payments for flood-damaged homes in Hat Yai district. Anutin asserted that it is not within a politician's purview to demand such payments, emphasizing that it is the responsibility of designated agencies to manage these tasks. When questioned by the media about potential political implications, Anutin retorted, questioning the media's own reputation in such matters.

According to Thai News Agency, Anutin addressed the concern over compensation payments, noting that while some residents have not yet received payments, many others have. He explained that the Cabinet had recently approved additional compensation for those affected in Hat Yai, although some individuals were initially overlooked or failed to register. He highlighted similar past cases in Ang Thong and Ayutthaya provinces, where prolonged flooding prompted the Cabinet to propose compensation to the Election Commission, which was recently approved. He assured that the process would continue following the necessary approvals.

Anutin emphasized that the issue is not politically motivated, stating, "It's not a politician's job to demand this. It's routine work for agencies like the Ministry of Interior and the Department of Disaster Prevention and Mitigation." He acknowledged that there may still be individuals who were missed or have yet to register, necessitating ongoing surveys due to the use of central government funds. He highlighted that during the period of parliamentary dissolution, the process requires not only Cabinet approval but also the Election Commission's endorsement. He urged those with inquiries to contact the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Interior, to whom the Cabinet has delegated full authority.

In response to queries about political motivations, Anutin deflected, asking the media if their nickname was "Bang" and reiterated that the necessary approvals from the Cabinet and the Election Commission have been secured. He stressed that the Ministry of Interior is now responsible for proceeding with the compensation process, concluding, "That's the end of it; there's nothing more to say."
