The Ao Maya in the Haad Nopparatthara Phi-Phi islands national park will be closed to all outsiders as of June until October.
The park chief, Mr Sarayuth Tanthien, said that the closure of the famous bay which is a favourite destination for both local and foreign tourists during the high season was intended to protect the corals from being disturbed by human activities and to enable them to rehabilitate and grow.
He said human activities from visiting tourists and boat engines had worsened water quality in the bay and, hence, affecting the corals.
However, he added that tour operators would be notified in advance of the closure of the bay which will coincide with low season.
