Bangkok: Police have remanded a homeless man who allegedly threw his friend into a pond at Benjasiri Park, resulting in his drowning, into custody. The suspect claims the deceased was acting erratically and he threw him into the pond to calm him down.
According to Thai News Agency, police at Thonglor Police Station have taken Mr. Thavisak Phanngam into custody on charges of intentional homicide. He is accused of assaulting a friend until he lost consciousness and then throwing him into a pond in Benjasiri Park, where the friend drowned. The incident occurred late last night, and he was arrested at 5:00 AM on Ratchadamri Road. Initially, Mr. Thavisak declined to comment on the motive but later admitted to an argument occurring beforehand. He stated, "Yes, that's correct. But he wasn't unconscious; he was still agitated. I couldn't control him, so I threw him in the water to calm him down."
When questioned about the deceased's psychotic episode, Mr. Thavisak remarked, "I don't know what he was stressed about, but he was always like that. When he became violent, you wouldn't know what was going on."
Following his arrest, police remanded him in custody at the Bangkok South Criminal Court. The investigating officer objected to bail in the remand request, and no relatives have contacted the court to request bail at this stage.
Initial investigations revealed that the two men were homeless and had been sleeping regularly in the park area for the past 3-4 weeks. They had become friends and sometimes begged together. Although park authorities do not permit alcohol consumption within the park, they would drink outside or elsewhere before returning to sleep near the park. An argument between the two last night led to the tragic incident.
