Bangkok Accelerates Water Drainage and Assists Flood Victims

Bangkok:The Bangkok Metropolitan Administration (BMA) is expediting water drainage efforts in the Nong Chok district while continuing to assist flood victims. It has also reiterated that registration for compensation remains open.

According to Thai News Agency, Governor of Bangkok, Mr. Chatchart Sittipunt, recently inspected the floodgate and pumping station at Khlong Saen Saep - Nong Chok. This location is vital for channeling water from local canals into Khlong Saen Saep. The BMA is collaborating with the Royal Irrigation Department to monitor water levels and develop effective drainage strategies.

Mr. Chatchart reported that opening the Nong Chok floodgate led to a decrease of approximately 10 centimeters in the water level on the Nong Chok side, while increasing it by about 2 centimeters in Khlong Saen Saep and the Min Buri area. Despite the manageable water levels, ongoing monitoring and synchronized pumping during low tides are essential to lessen the impact on downstream and inner Bangkok areas.

In terms of flood relief, the Bangkok Governor acknowledged the congestion caused by the high number of people submitting documents. Apologizing for the inconvenience, he noted that over 1 million registrations have been submitted, surpassing expectations. For those registered through the "Government" application, the process can be completed digitally, but additional document submissions may be required in specific cases.

The BMA plans to expand walk-in registration points, distribute queue tickets throughout the day, and assign staff from unaffected districts to assist in a 'district buddy' format. Improvements in the queuing system are also planned to reduce waiting times.

Mr. Chatchart confirmed that no deadline has been set for registering for flood relief funds, dismissing rumors of an October 23rd cutoff. The city is open to extending the deadline, ensuring that flood victims can access services without fear of losing eligibility.
