Bangkok: The director of the Bangkok Election Commission has dismissed rumors regarding vote buying for 7,500 baht, stating such claims are unlikely. The commission has confirmed its preparedness for the upcoming general election and referendum and reiterated the prohibition of alcohol sales on election day to ensure a fair process.
According to Thai News Agency, Acting Sub-Lieutenant Sampan Saengkhamlert, the Director of the Bangkok Election Commission, outlined the comprehensive preparations undertaken for the general election and referendum in Bangkok. Essential materials, equipment, and documents have been distributed to all constituencies. The management of advance polling stations, set for February 1, 2026, is also in place, with candidate lists dispatched throughout the city.
Acting Sub-Lieutenant Sampan emphasized the training provided to polling station committee members across over 6,353 stations, involving around 103,000 personnel to ensure consistent operations. A significant number of voters, over 53,000, have registered for advance voting outside their districts, with Bang Kapi expecting the highest turnout.
Regarding advance voting locations, adjustments have been made in Lak Si and Huai Khwang districts to better accommodate voters. Clear signage and traffic management measures are in place to avoid confusion.
The Director addressed media guidelines, prohibiting any interference with election officials and ensuring impartial reporting. Restrictions are also placed on publishing opinion polls during the lead-up to the election. Moreover, photographing ballot papers is strictly forbidden.
Concerns about vote buying were addressed, with no evidence found to support the rumors of 7,500 baht per vote transactions. However, election authorities continue to monitor the situation closely.
Complaints have mainly focused on campaign signs obstructing traffic, which have been communicated to candidates for resolution. As for the distribution of candidate documents, any related expenses must be declared within legal limits.
Election observers have been briefed on their roles, with rapid response teams deployed to ensure compliance with election laws. The commission has also prepared promotional materials to aid voter understanding and reduce invalid ballots.
Finally, the sale of alcoholic beverages is banned on both election and advance voting days to maintain order and fairness in the electoral process.
