Bangkok: The Bangkok Metropolitan Administration (BMA) has taken decisive action to ensure the safety of entertainment venues along Khao San Road and Ram Butri Road. The BMA recently engaged with business operators in these areas to evaluate safety standards and mandated the closure of establishments failing to meet the necessary criteria.
According to Thai News Agency, Bangkok Governor Chatchart Sittiphan led a meeting with business operators and community representatives near Khao San Road. The discussions focused on ensuring legal business operations while prioritizing customer safety, following a fire incident at "Brewery at Ladprao" in July. The meeting aimed to develop suitable solutions for the area through collaborative efforts.
An inspection of the venues on Khao San Road and Ram Butri Road identified 42 establishments with similar operations. Notably, only 4 of these establishments possessed valid licenses, while 38 others had various types of licenses, including 5 with live music licenses, 25 with food licenses, and 8 without any licenses.
The Phra Nakhon District Office conducted safety inspections from July 14 to August 7, 2026, to evaluate fire prevention measures. Their findings revealed that only 2 shops initially met the safety criteria. Recommendations for improvement were given to 37 shops, while 3 shops were ordered to cease operations under Section 45 due to non-compliance. A follow-up inspection showed improvement, with 6 shops meeting the criteria, but 3 continued to fail.
Additionally, the inspections uncovered 13 establishments operating past the legally permitted hours of midnight. Two inspections revealed that 9 and 12 establishments, respectively, were in violation, with 8 offenders repeating the infraction. The Phra Nakhon District Office coordinated with local police to address these violations.
Governor Chatchart directed officials to document the specific challenges faced by each establishment to identify actionable solutions within the legal framework. He also emphasized the importance of expediting safety improvements tailored to specific locations and operations, and considering flexibility in zoning regulations for entertainment venues.
