Bangkok: The Bangkok Metropolitan Administration (BMA) has imposed the maximum fine on a contractor for sweeping concrete debris into Phra Khanong Canal and has ordered dredging and restoration of the canal.

According to Thai News Agency, Ms. Pimchutha Sakunsitthada, Director of Watthana District, disclosed that the incident came to light after a video circulated online on August 25, 2026, showing construction workers dumping concrete debris directly into the canal. This act raised public concerns about potential environmental and waterway impacts. In response, the BMA, with oversight from the Watthana District Office and the Drainage Department led by Mr. Jesada Chantharaprapha, conducted a site inspection. They instructed the contractor to comply with legal duties and address the environmental damage promptly.

The investigation confirmed the contractor's violation, prompting the Watthana District Office's enforcement division to impose a strict legal penalty. The contractor was fined 10,000 baht per offense under the Public Cleanliness and Orderliness Act, amounting to a total of 20,000 baht for two offenses. Additionally, the BMA directed the contractor to dredge the canal and remove the debris to restore its condition, ensuring no further impact on drainage efficiency and the environment. The process is being closely monitored by relevant agencies.

This decisive action underscores the BMA's commitment to supervising construction activities and safeguarding public water sources. The BMA has made it clear that it will not permit actions that harm the environment, mandating all contractors to operate responsibly and within legal frameworks. Any violations will be met with strict legal consequences.
