Bank of Thailand Reserves Banknotes to Support Flood Relief Efforts

Bangkok: The Bank of Thailand is taking measures to address cash demands in the aftermath of recent floods by reserving banknotes and offering additional channels for exchanging damaged currency through December 2025.

According to Thai News Agency, Ms. Busakorn Thirapanyachai, Assistant Governor for Payment Systems Infrastructure and Services at the Bank of Thailand (BOT), stated that the BOT has prepared banknotes to meet the heightened cash needs during the flood recovery period. This preparation ensures that there are sufficient disbursements during periods of increased demand. The BOT has also increased its reserves at banknote management centers in nearby provinces, with the possibility of adding more reserves in Hat Yai if the demand rises. Furthermore, the BOT is coordinating with financial institutions to distribute banknotes to the public through open branches and ATMs.

For those dealing with banknotes that have been damaged or torn due to the floods, citizens can exchange them at any open Government Savings Bank branch every day. In addition, commercial banks in Songkhla Province and surrounding areas are offering daily exchanges of damaged banknotes throughout December 2025, a change from the previous schedule of Wednesdays only. The Bank of Thailand will also organize “Banknote Clinics” to aid in the exchange of damaged banknotes, with further details on dates, times, and locations to be announced. Polymer banknotes, which are designed to be more durable, can be washed and dried for usability. However, if they remain damaged, they can be exchanged in the same manner as other banknotes.
