Bhumjaithai and Palang Pracharath Parties Clash Over Committee Leadership in PM2.5 and Forest Fires Management

Bangkok: Chaos erupted during the first meeting of the ad hoc committee on forest fires and PM2.5 dust management as Bhumjaithai Party and Palang Pracharath Party competed for the chairmanship, with Pimpattra Wichaikul ultimately winning the vote.

According to Thai News Agency, the meeting aimed to elect a chairman and discuss measures for managing forest fires and PM2.5 pollution. Mr. Suchart Thadathamrongvej from Pheu Thai Party temporarily chaired the meeting before the nominations for the committee chairman were invited. Mr. Sombat Yasin of Bhumjaithai Party nominated Ms. Pimpattra Wichaikul, while Mr. Patarapong Leelaphat nominated himself, suggesting nominees present their visions given the committee's short timeframe to finalize recommendations by July 11th.

Debate ensued over whether the chairman should be from the government side. Dr. Ekkapop Pienpises of Bhumjaithai Party emphasized that the committee's focus should not be on political affiliations but on addressing the PM2.5 issue. Ms. Pimpattra highlighted the importance of collaboration and fieldwork, while Mr. Phatarapong stressed the need for a collaborative committee, thorough research, and public participation.

Ultimately, the committee voted by secret ballot, electing Ms. Pimpattra as chairman. Mr. Sombat Yasinthu and Mr. Phatthapong Leelaphat were appointed first and second vice-chairmen, respectively, with Ms. Picharat Lauhapongchana as secretary.
