Pattani: Violence erupted once again in the southern border provinces as multiple bombings and arson attacks targeted a convenience store in the Mayo district of Pattani. This marks the third consecutive night of unrest in the region. Last night, a bomb was planted and an arson attack was carried out at a convenience store, leading to the immediate detention of two suspects by authorities who are currently being interrogated to ascertain further details about the incident. This morning, the area remains cordoned off for security purposes.
According to Thai News Agency, the attack involved four unidentified armed assailants who executed an incendiary bombing at the store in Ban Ta Bae, Mayo District. The explosion resulted in a massive fire that completely destroyed the establishment. The incident, occurring around 8:20 PM, followed a pattern observed in previous attacks.
The attackers arrived on a motorcycle and three armed men entered the store while a fourth stayed behind as a lookout. Customers and employees were ordered to leave, coinciding with the arrival of a police vehicle from Mayo Police Station. A gunfight ensued as the perpetrators exited the store, eventually fleeing the scene on their motorcycle. Shortly after, the store was engulfed in flames due to the explosive device planted with fuel. Despite the intensity of the event, no law enforcement officers were harmed, though the police vehicle was damaged.
In the aftermath, authorities pursued the suspects, finding a trail of blood that suggested injuries during the confrontation. Medical facilities and pharmacies have been alerted to report any gunshot wounds immediately. The two detained suspects, Mr. Afdhol and Mr. Aris, are currently under interrogation to uncover potential connections to the incident.
As investigations continue, the scene remains secured while forensic and bomb disposal teams are expected to collect evidence. The convenience store sustained extensive damage, including to its structure and merchandise, with estimated losses from this and a previous attack in Bang Pu, Yaharing district, amounting to over 20 million baht.
Additionally, the railway tracks between Maruebo and Tanyongmas stations in Narathiwat province, previously damaged by an explosion, have been repaired. The Suai Go-lok railway station has reopened, with the first train departing this morning. However, some train services remain altered or suspended as operations adjust to the recent disruptions.
