Bangkok: Thailand's state-run bus operator anticipates a significant surge in passenger numbers today, projecting a peak of 160,000 as travelers make their way home for the New Year holidays, the company's chief executive revealed on Tuesday. Attawit Rakjamroon, President of Transport Co., Ltd., announced that Bangkok's primary northern and northeastern terminal, Mo Chit 2, has been experiencing a consistent influx of passengers.
According to Thai News Agency, the company estimates that passenger numbers for arrivals and departures on December 30, the last working day of the year, will range between 150,000 and 160,000. In response to this anticipated increase, the bus operator has arranged over 8,000 bus trips and has also deployed approximately 1,000 non-scheduled supplemental buses to accommodate all travelers.
On Monday, the bus operator recorded 126,429 passengers across 7,091 bus trips nationwide. More than 76,000 individuals departed from the capital, highlighting the significant movement of people during this holiday period. Transport hubs across Thailand traditionally witness a large exodus during the New Year, which is one of the country's major holiday peaks, alongside the Songkran festival in April.
