Cambodia Establishes Military Base at Ta Kwai Temple, Breaching International Protocols

Bangkok: Cambodia has come under scrutiny for setting up a military base at the historically significant Ta Kwai Temple, a move that has ignited regional tensions and stands in violation of international principles.

According to Thai News Agency, the 2nd Army Region disclosed that Cambodian military forces have been utilizing the Ta Kwai Temple area as a strategic site to deploy troops, establish an operational base, and set up firing positions for both direct and indirect attacks. These actions pose a tactical threat to Thai forces and undermine the integrity of the ancient monument, which is meant to be preserved free from military operations as per international guidelines.

The situation is further exacerbated by reports that Cambodian soldiers are involving family members in military missions, a practice that contravenes military safety standards and international humanitarian principles. This inclusion of non-military personnel in operations not only raises safety concerns but also adds another layer of complexity to the regional tensions.

A source from the 2nd Army Region commented on the developments, stating, “Using historical sites as military bases, firing positions, and engaging in such illegal activities creates unnecessary tension, fear, and violence, and clearly violates international norms.” The use of the Ta Kwai Temple for military purposes has already caused damage to the site and reflects a disregard for international conventions designed to protect cultural heritage.

Efforts to address this situation are ongoing, but the actions have already cast a shadow over regional relations and highlighted the urgent need for adherence to international agreements regarding the protection of historical sites.
