Trat: Today, Captain Thammanoon Wanna, commander of the Trat Marine Special Task Force, revealed the chaotic situation along the Thai-Cambodian border that forced the Cambodian Observer Team (AOT) to abruptly end their mission to investigate the facts, mistakenly believing that the Thai side had opened fire.
According to Thai News Agency, the incident occurred this morning at the border of Ban Thomda, Viel Veng District, Pursat Province, on the Cambodian side, opposite Ban Chamrak, Chamrak Subdistrict, Mueang District, Trat Province, while a Cambodian observer team was inspecting the area.
Captain Thammanoon stated that during the inspection, the observers heard several sounds resembling gunfire from the Thai side, which prompted them to quickly cease their mission and withdraw their forces. They reported to their Cambodian superiors that the Thais had opened fire, interpreting it as a violation of the agreement.
However, the commander of Trat’s Task Force clarified that it was Cambodian soldiers who brought around 30 men to the border near the Chom Muay base, close to three houses. They lit dozens of firecrackers and threw them toward the Thai side to mimic the sound of gunshots. Thai soldiers in the area captured the entire event on video.
The incident was promptly reported to the commander of the Trat Marine Task Force, who confirmed it was a deliberate act by the Cambodian side to deceive the observers into believing the Thai side had breached the agreement. Captain Thammanoon concluded by stating that all details have been communicated to commanders at all levels.
