Chachoengsao Residents Urge Delay in Water Pumping Amid Flooding Concerns

Chachoengsao:Residents along the Khlong Klang canal are urgently requesting a delay in water pumping to mitigate severe flooding. Behind the Ban Mai pumping station, some homes face water levels over 1.20 meters, while orchards and shrimp ponds are at risk of damage. The community is appealing to authorities to slow the pumping during high tide to prevent further inundation.

According to Thai News Agency, the Ban Mai pumping station in Tha Khai Subdistrict, an essential site for water drainage, has increased its pumping capacity. This station channels water from Khlong Khuean District into Chachoengsao city before it flows into the Bang Pakong River. Recently, six additional large-diameter pumps were installed, exacerbating flooding in over ten local homes.

Mr. Suphap Karawong, a 49-year-old flood victim, reported the difficulties he faces as water continues to enter his home. Some of his belongings are challenging to move or elevate. He remains cautious as his house is not yet fully submerged and has urged authorities to consider slowing the pumping to mitigate the impact of high tides.

Ms. Riam Wichitcharoen, a 68-year-old shrimp farmer, expressed her concerns about the increased number of pumps at Ban Mai. Despite using sandbags to protect her shrimp ponds, she fears the defenses may not hold against rising waters, threatening her 100,000 shrimp. She continues her farming efforts despite the precarious conditions.

The flooding has also affected local orchards, causing significant damage. Residents, whose families have lived in the area for generations, are grappling with unprecedented flooding due to the artificial pumping, which compounds the challenges posed by natural weather events.
