Songkhla: Chaiwut Thanakamanusorn and Dr. Jetsada Tonawanik, both prime ministerial candidates from the Rak Chart Party, have raised concerns about the Democrat Party's apparent shift in political alliances, questioning whether it has forgotten its foundational stance of collaborating with the "Orange-Red" factions. This perceived change has sparked discontent among residents in both southern Thailand and Bangkok.
According to Thai News Agency, the Rak Chart Party leaders visited Songkhla province to introduce their party and its policies to the public. They commenced their campaign by paying respects at the Songkhla City Pillar Shrine, a significant cultural landmark. The shrine, with its teak wood city pillar bestowed by King Rama III, symbolizes the region's historical heritage.
In a symbolic gesture, Mr. Jetsada, accompanied by King Konbai, led a Chinese lion dance performance in front of the shrine, signifying prosperity and success. Following the performance, the Rak Chart Party team engaged with the public, receiving a positive reception. During their campaign, they encountered the New Opportunity Party's team, led by Mr. Jatuporn Buruspat, and exchanged greetings.
Public sentiment in the South reflects confusion over the Democrat Party's political views, with some expressing disillusionment. Mr. Jetsada addressed these concerns by highlighting the public's desire for a party that upholds national, religious, and monarchical values. He criticized the Democrat Party's slogan, "The sky will return to the South," which he claims contradicts local sentiments. The party's willingness to engage with other political factions, including potential constitutional amendments, has further fueled confusion.
Mr. Jetsada questioned the Democrat Party's commitment to its historical roots, invoking Major Khuang Aphaiwong and the 1932 Siamese Revolution. He urged the party to clarify its intentions and wondered if it was aligning with those seeking to draft a new constitution, reminiscent of the People's Party era.
Echoing these sentiments, Mr. Chaiwut criticized the Democrat Party's openness to cooperating with the "Orange Party," questioning their understanding of its implications on national unity and stability. He emphasized the importance of honoring the legacy of Khuang Aphaiwong and remaining true to the party's original ideology.
Chaiwut also addressed Democrat Party supporters in Bangkok, referencing past conflicts with the Red Shirts and questioning the rationale behind potentially aligning with parties associated with Thaksin Shinawatra. He called for transparency and honesty with the electorate, urging the Democrat Party to reconsider its stance and maintain its ideological integrity.
