Beijing: China is bracing for days of continuous heavy rain along its coast and in southern regions, ordering the evacuation of tens of thousands of people as Typhoon Narra moves inland and Typhoon Saudel approaches the eastern coast.

According to Thai News Agency, Typhoon Narra made landfall as a tropical storm late Tuesday in southern Hainan province after remaining dormant in the Gulf of Tonkin for several days, bringing heavy rains across Guangxi, Hainan, and Guangdong provinces. Narra was part of a simultaneous four-storm phenomenon involving Narra, Saudel, Ganari, and Asani.

A simultaneous combination of storms has forced local authorities in Guangxi and Hainan provinces to close businesses, suspend tourism activities, and evacuate tens of thousands of people from vulnerable areas. Heavy rainfall is expected to continue in southern Guangxi, even though earlier heavy rains have already caused several rivers to overflow and flood low-lying areas in Guangxi.

Typhoon Saudel is expected to make landfall on China's eastern coast, between Zhejiang and Fujian provinces, sometime between Thursday and Friday. Weather models predict that the outer bands of the storm may extend back towards Guangxi province. Meanwhile, the Japan Meteorological Agency has issued warnings of dangerous gusts of wind as Typhoon Saudel struck Okinawa Prefecture on Wednesday morning, impacting the Amami Islands in Kagoshima Prefecture and leaving nearly 35,000 homes without power. Authorities have issued the highest alert level for landslides, flooding, and overflowing rivers.

The impact of the storm also resulted in the cancellation of 92 flights operating at airports across Okinawa Prefecture on Wednesday. All Nippon Airways (ANA) suspended all flights to and from Naha Airport, the prefecture's main airport. Meanwhile, Taiwan's Meteorological Bureau reported that Typhoon Saudel is moving north of the island and is expected to gradually weaken, but will continue to bring moderate rainfall to some areas in northern and southern Taiwan until Friday.
