Thai Sports Associations Set Ambitious Medal Targets for 20th Asian Games

Bangkok: Thai sports associations have announced their medal targets for the upcoming 20th Asian Games in Aichi-Nagoya, Japan. During two Meet the Press sessions organized by the Sports Journalists and Photographers Association of Thailand at the Rajamangala National Stadium, the golf teams declared their aim to secure at least one gold medal, while 16 sports teams collectively aim for four gold medals.

According to Thai News Agency, the second press conference on August 26th featured eight sports associations detailing their readiness and expectations for the Asian Games. Suphaluck Chairoj, President of the Thai Padel Association, highlighted the growing popularity of padel in Thailand, emphasizing the sport's inclusion in the 2027 SEA Games. Thailand's padel athletes are set to compete for two gold medals, with a focus on gaining experience against strong teams from Qatar and Japan.

Sanguan Khosawintha, President of the Archery Association of Thailand, expressed optimism for the archery teams, which are banking on their mix of veteran and new talents to secure at least one medal. Despite the tough competition from archery powerhouses like India, South Korea, and China, recent performances at the Asian Championships have been encouraging.

Natthawut Ruangwes, President of the Table Tennis Association of Thailand, stated that while Thai table tennis faces stiff competition from Asian world champions, the team aims to reach the quarterfinals. The association is hopeful, especially in the women's team and doubles events, where they have shown significant promise.

Rawich Wataniyakul, the shooting team coach, and Mr. Sakol Wannapong, President of the Shooting Sport Association of Thailand, outlined their strategy for the shooting events, focusing on making it to the finals. With China and India as strong competitors, the Thai shooting team is concentrating on mental fortitude and precision to achieve their goals.

General Wisut Dechskul and Somsak Kanjanakhon from the Amateur Weightlifting Association of Thailand revealed that the weightlifting team, led by Olympic medalists, is aiming for 2-3 medals. While facing formidable opponents from China and Indonesia, the team believes their preparation and strategic planning will yield results.

The basketball association, represented by "Coach So" Sophon Pinijpacharalert, is optimistic about the 3x3 basketball teams despite the men's 5x5 team's absence. With a new women's team and experienced players in the men's squad, Thailand hopes to secure medals in both categories.

Kittisak Chaimongkoltrakul, Secretary-General of the Golf Association of Thailand, shared the golf teams' aspirations for at least one gold medal. The teams are well-prepared, having familiarized themselves with the Japanese golf course conditions, and are hopeful of replicating their past success.

Mr. Pallop Sripaivall summarized the collective goals of the Thai sports associations, emphasizing the confidence and preparedness of the athletes. The third Meet the Press event is scheduled for August 28, with more associations set to reveal their strategies and expectations for the Asian Games.
