China’s Chunyun Holiday Travel Surpasses 1.4 Billion Trips

Beijing: China has announced that the number of trips made during the initial week of the Chunyun holiday period has exceeded 1.4 billion.

According to Thai News Agency, China's Ministry of Transport reported that during the first week of the 2026 Spring Festival travel rush, known as Chunyun, which spanned from February 2 to February 8, interregional passenger journeys in China surpassed 1.4 billion. This significant figure includes a variety of travel modes: over 1.3 billion trips by road, more than 86 million by rail, over 4.9 million by water, and upwards of 16 million by air.

On February 8, which marked the seventh day of the Chunyun Festival, inter-regional travel reached a record-breaking 227.71 million trips, reflecting a 2.3 percent increase compared to the same day in 2025. The Lunar New Year, or Chinese New Year, which is set for February 17th this year, includes an official nine-day holiday period. The annual Chunyun Migration is recognized as the largest human migration globally, with an estimated 9.5 billion inter-regional journeys expected throughout this year's Chunyun.
