Chonburi: Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Natural Resources and Environment, Suchart Chomklin, addressed concerns about the vote counting in Chonburi Constituency 1, where a recount has been requested by citizens. Suchart sarcastically likened the refusal to accept election results to a child whining for candy, questioning the ability of such individuals to govern effectively.
According to Thai News Agency, Suchart expressed no concern over the possibility of a recount but raised questions about the responsibility of those who sought it if the results remained unchanged. He wondered if those challenging the results would dare to resign as Members of Parliament. Suchart highlighted the difficult 40-day campaign period and urged the Election Commission to clarify the next steps while emphasizing the separation of responsibilities, with his role ending after the campaign period on February 7th.
Suchart elaborated that political party observers, equipped with video cameras, monitored voter behavior at polling stations on Election Day, February 8th. He clarified that he monitored the vote count results from home and was not present at the polling stations during the counting process. He explained the legal procedures in Thailand regarding discrepancies in ballot counts and emphasized the necessity for politicians to accept the law.
Addressing the situation in Chonburi, Suchart attributed the unrest to spiritual leaders stirring trouble through social media. He cited his vote count of approximately 45,100 compared to 41,000 for his opponent, which he argued was not a significant difference. Suchart questioned the motives behind the refusal to accept the election results and stressed that any objections to the vote count should be legally addressed through the appropriate channels, including the court.
In response to media inquiries about alleged irregularities, Suchart defended the integrity of the vote count, emphasizing the presence of party observers and the legal framework in place. He maintained that his campaign adhered to democratic principles and reiterated his readiness to comply with the law, while questioning the accountability of those inciting dissent on social media.
Suchart concluded by underscoring the role of the Election Commission in managing the election process, asserting that any further actions should be pursued within the legal system. He likened the situation to a child demanding candy and questioned the practicality of such behavior in governance.
