Bangkok: Chonlanan has raised concerns over the public health system’s response to the severe flooding in Hat Yai and the southern region. The flooding has exposed deficiencies in warning systems and equipment, which failed to reach all citizens effectively. He emphasized the necessity of learning from this experience to formulate a comprehensive national strategic plan for disaster prevention.
According to Thai News Agency, Dr. Cholanat Srikaew, a Pheu Thai Party MP for Nan, addressed the situation at the Parliament building, expressing his deepest concern for the residents of Hat Yai and the South, who have suffered from what is considered the worst flooding ever in the region. He conveyed his condolences and highlighted the unanticipated nature of the disaster, which overwhelmed the emergency response systems. Dr. Cholanat, drawing from his experience with flooding in the northern region of Nan Province, acknowledged the systemic failures in providing widespread public access to resources and information. He stressed the need for better preparation, warning systems, and operational emergency equipment to prevent similar situations in the future.
Dr. Cholanat reiterated the importance of collaboration and support from all parties, including government organizations, to address the crisis. He advocated for implementing suggestions from various leaders, such as Mr. Chulphan Amornvivat of the Pheu Thai Party, focusing on public interests over political affiliations.
In response to questions about the public health system’s role during the floods, Dr. Cholanat emphasized the urgent need for a strategic approach to protect hospitals and healthcare facilities. He warned that without proper planning, the consequences for patient care, transportation, and evacuation processes could lead to severe crises. Reflecting on his tenure as Minister of Public Health, he underscored the need for a robust network to manage water and electricity disruptions, including the provision of generators and dedicated water systems. Dr. Cholanat called for these lessons to be incorporated into a national disaster prevention strategy to enhance future resilience.
