Chulaphan Expresses No Objection to Sophon’s Potential Role as House Speaker

Bangkok: Chulaphan Amornvivat, leader of the Pheu Thai Party, announced no objection to Sophon Saram becoming the Speaker of the House, highlighting that the decision lies with government leaders. Chulaphan led a delegation from Pheu Thai's executive committee in discussions with the Bhumjaithai Party concerning the upcoming parliamentary session, emphasizing that ministerial positions were not on the agenda, and focus remains on the prime ministerial vote.

According to Thai News Agency, Chulaphan, alongside executive committee members Chusak Sirinil and Sudawan Wangsupakitkosol, met with Bhumjaithai Party representatives. Chulaphan indicated that the party's candidate for Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives has not yet been finalized, pending further discussions with Bhumjaithai. Once an agreement is reached, the decision will be made public in compliance with legal procedures.

Chulaphan reiterated that current talks with the Bhumjaithai Party are aimed at fostering collaboration before the House of Representatives convenes. Initial tasks include electing the Speaker and Deputy Speakers of the House, requiring coalition consensus. Subsequent discussions will address the selection of a Prime Minister, followed by Cabinet formation. Chulaphan stressed the importance of following a sequential process, noting that Cabinet discussions should occur post-prime ministerial selection.

Addressing scrutiny of ministerial candidates' qualifications, Chulaphan noted the adherence to legal requirements, involving verification by 18 agencies. He assured that candidates with submitted names should be confident in their clean backgrounds, viewing the process as routine for political appointments.

Chulaphan also commented on the allocation of committee positions within the Pheu Thai Party, clarifying that it is a parliamentary matter, not discussed with Bhumjaithai. Based on parliamentary rules and the party's number of MPs, Pheu Thai could secure 5-6 committee chairpersons.

When questioned about rumors of Sophon Saram's potential appointment as Speaker of the House, Chulaphan expressed no concern, citing reliance on news reports and deferring the decision to the leading government party, awaiting Bhumjaithai's stance.

Chulaphan concluded by stating that if the opposition nominates a candidate for Speaker, a vote will ensue as part of the parliamentary process, emphasizing its simplicity and routine nature.
