Coach Wang Aims for Quarterfinals in AFC U-23 Asian Championship

Bangkok: The Thai U-23 national team continued their morning training session in preparation for their flight to Saudi Arabia on January 3rd to compete in the AFC U-23 Asian Championship finals.

According to Thai News Agency, this morning, the Thailand U-23 national football team continued their training at the Yamaoka Hanasaka Academy grounds in preparation for the AFC U-23 Asian Championship finals in Saudi Arabia. All 23 players participated in the training session.

However, the AFC U-23 Asian Championship is not during a FIFA International Match Day, meaning the Thai team will be without key players from the SEA Games squad such as Yotsakorn Burapha, who scored 6 goals, Kakana Khamyok, Chanaphat Buaphan, Waris Chuthong, Thanakrit Chotimueangpak, and Seksan Ratree. Furthermore, there will be no friendly matches scheduled during this training period as Thai League clubs are on their New Year's break.

"Coach Wang" Thawatchai Damrong-ongtrakul, head coach of the Thailand U-23 national team, stated that they will try their best. "We've been preparing the team for almost six months. We have core players from the SEA Games and the Asian Championship qualifiers. We might be missing about eight key players due to club commitments, which has a significant impact. But I believe we have many talented younger players. We missed our target at the SEA Games, but we will try to move forward. I, and the players who are representing the nation, want them to be proud and have faith in being representatives of Thailand."

The schedule for the Thai U-23 national team to compete in the Asian Championship includes matches against Australia on January 8, 2026, at 6:30 PM, Iraq on January 11, 2026, at 9:00 PM, and China on January 14, 2026, at 6:30 PM.
