Confident That Gem Exports Will Grow by at Least 5 Percent This Year

Bangkok: The Ministry of Commerce is confident that this year’s gem export growth rate will be at least 5%. The Ministry is preparing to hold the Bangkok Gems event, with an expected trade value of at least 3.5 billion baht. The Department of International Trade Promotion (DITP), the main organizer, has joined forces with the Gem and Jewelry Institute of Thailand (Public Organization) or GIT, a co-organizer, and the executive committee of both the public and private sectors to announce the 72nd Bangkok Gems and Jewelry Fair, scheduled for September 9-13 at the Queen Sirikit National Convention Center. The event is expected to generate at least US$100 million in revenue.

According to Thai News Agency, Ms. Sunantha Kangwalkulkit, Director-General of the Department of International Trade Promotion (DITP), expects at least 40,000 visitors from around the world to attend this event, which is expected to generate at least 3.5 billion baht in trade value. The Bangkok Gems Fair has grown significantly in every aspect and is recognized by buyers and importers worldwide as one of the world’s four most important exhibitions, as well as the world’s largest trading center for colored gemstones. Regarding Thai gem and jewelry exports, excluding gold bars, in 2024 Thailand exported US$9.6 billion, an 11.5 percent increase. In the first six months of 2025 (January to June), growth increased by 63 percent, reaching a value of US$7.4 billion. Key export products include gold jewelry, silver jewelry, and colored gemstones, with key export markets being India, Hong Kong, and the United States. The growth rate for 2025 is expected to exceed the 5 percent export target.

Mr. Sumet Prasongphongchai, Director of the Gem and Jewelry Institute of Thailand (GIT), a key partner of the DITP, stated that the success of the Bangkok Gems and Jewelry Fair today is a testament to the confidence that global buyers have in the Thai gem and jewelry industry. Activities at the fair include seminars on marketing and technical knowledge, networking receptions to build business partnerships, exhibitions to promote the image of the Thai jewelry industry, and meetings with global partner organizations. The World Gold Council, in collaboration with the GIT and the Gold Traders Association of Thailand, is hosting the “Thailand Gold Forum” within the Bangkok Gems Fair to exchange knowledge and foster international cooperation. This parallel activity supports the DITP’s proactive export strategy.
