Controversy Over 2.8 Trillion Baht Social Security Fund Sparks Debate

Bangkok: Controversy has erupted over the management of the 2.8 trillion baht Social Security Fund, with criticism directed at the government's lack of transparency. Mr. Nattapong Ruangpanyawut, leader of the People's Party and a prime ministerial candidate, has voiced concerns about the fund's management. He emphasized that the fund, which belongs to workers nationwide, is being handled by a government that lacks transparency and accountability. Nattapong highlighted issues such as the allocation of funds to unnecessary projects and instances of overpriced building purchases.

According to Thai News Agency, Mr. Nattapong suggested that if the fund were managed by professionals, similar to the Government Pension Fund (GPF), it could generate more revenue for the public's benefit. The controversy is deeply tied to politics, with questions surrounding the purchase of the Skyy9 building and the conduct of certain ministers remaining unaddressed. He stressed the need for transparency in both the Social Security Fund and the government budget, which he believes should start with political reform. He posed the question of how much more profit, possibly exceeding 80 billion baht, could have been generated under professional management.

Abhisit Vejjajiva, leader of the Democrat Party, has also weighed in on the issue, advocating for a comprehensive overhaul of the social security system. Abhisit proposed transforming the Social Security Office (SSO) into an independent agency to enhance transparency and reviewing the entire benefits system. He suggested integrating insured individuals into the universal healthcare system and using contributions to bolster long-term welfare benefits, such as those for old age. Abhisit warned that without significant structural changes, issues of inequality and fund instability will persist.
