Court orders imprisonment for Chan Puangphet in relief bag corruption case

The Criminal Court for Corruption and Misconduct, Region 1, Saraburi, sentenced “Chan Puangphet” to 6 years and 18 months in prison for the relief bag corruption case.

On October 24, 2024, the Criminal Court for Corruption and Misconduct Cases Region 1, Saraburi, scheduled a reading of the verdict in the case filed by the National Anti-Corruption Commission (NACC) as the plaintiff against Mr. Chan Puangphet, when he was the president of the Provincial Administrative Organization (PAO) of Pathum Thani, and 7 others as defendants in Case No. At 5/67 on charges of misconduct in official positions and offenses under the Organic Act on Prevention and Suppression of Corruption B.E. 2561 in the case of corruption in the procurement of relief bags in the flood relief project in Pathum Thani Province, 2 times in 2011, worth millions of baht.

The court read out the verdict to sentence Mr. Chan Puangphet and his group to 5 years in prison for 2 counts, totaling 10 years. However, because the defendants gave useful in
formation, the sentence was reduced by a third, to 3 years and 9 months for each count, totaling 6 years and 18 months.

In this case, on January 11, 2024, the National Anti-Corruption Commission, the plaintiff, filed a lawsuit against Mr. Chan Puangphet, 1, and 7 others as defendants in case number A.T.5/2024 on charges of malfeasance in office under the Criminal Code, Sections 86, 151, 157, and offenses under the Organic Act on the Prevention and Suppression of Corruption, B.E. 2542 and its amendments, Section 123/1 (original).

Today (October 24, 2024), the Criminal Court for Corruption and Misconduct, Region 1, has scheduled a hearing for the verdict at 9:00 a.m. The court sentenced defendants 1, 3 and 6 to 3 years and 9 months in prison for each of the two counts, totaling 6 years and 18 months in prison each; defendant 2 to 2 years and 6 months in prison for each of the two counts, totaling 4 years and 12 months in prison; and defendant 7 to 3 years and 4 months in prison. All seven defendants are order
ed to jointly pay 1,000,000 baht or have their other assets confiscated instead of the aforementioned value; and defendants 1 and 6 are ordered to jointly pay 3,000,000 baht or have their other assets confiscated instead of the aforementioned value, to be forfeited to the state.
