Democrat Party Prepares to Announce Prime Minister Candidate and Policies

Bangkok: The Democrat Party is gearing up to unveil its prime minister candidate, along with prospective candidates and policies, in the coming week.

According to Thai News Agency, the party is optimistic about the competitiveness of its prime minister candidate, as six former MPs have shown interest in running in their previous constituencies. Notable figures among the former list MPs include Chuan Leekpai and Jurin Laksanawisit, although Banyat Laksanawisit has not signaled any intention to contest, and Aswin Laksanawisit has quietly joined the party.

Mr. Pongsakorn Kwanmuang, the party’s spokesperson, shared insights following a meeting led by party leader Abhisit Vejjajiva regarding candidate selection. The process, currently in the interview stage, will advance to primary voting at party branches before a final decision by the executive committee. The official announcement of prospective parliamentary candidates and the three prime ministerial candidates is set for December 24th.

The spokesperson highlighted that interest in running for Member of Parliament exceeds available constituencies, with 150 individuals vying for 33 slots in Bangkok alone, and 400 expressing interest on the party list. The party’s selection criteria draw from Bill Clinton’s theory, emphasizing expertise, communication, track record, policy presentation, and fundraising ability.

Mr. Pongsakorn acknowledged the party’s ongoing transition, highlighting that six former MPs aim to run in their original constituencies, including Mr. Chaichana Dechdecho and Mr. Kanj Tangpong. Former list MPs like Mr. Chuan Leekpai and Mr. Jurin Laksanawisit also plan to run again, while Mr. Banyat Banthadthan has not expressed intentions. Candidates not selected initially could still contribute to the party and may be reconsidered if necessary.

On upcoming policies, Mr. Pongsakorn mentioned a forthcoming announcement, focusing on honest and professional politics. The party’s early implementation of policies prior to parliament’s dissolution is seen as an advantage, with updates to previous policies under review for next week’s launch.

Regarding the prime minister candidate, Mr. Pongsakorn expressed confidence in the party’s choice to compete against other parties. The possibility of a female candidate remains under executive committee consideration. The party boasts respected experts, including Mr. Abhisit and Mr. Korn Chatikavanij, and younger leaders like Mr. Veerapong Prapha, emphasizing professionalism and avoiding political games.

When questioned about the party’s popularity, Mr. Pongsakorn emphasized national well-being over ratings, asserting the party’s focus on the nation’s safety rather than popularity-driven solutions. He mentioned that his father, Pol. Gen. Aswin Kwanmuang, has joined the party but does not intend to run for MP, aiming instead to support the election campaign. Mr. Pongsakorn himself intends to run unopposed in Bangkok’s District 4.
