Department of Highways Expedites Dismantling of Damaged Bridge on Rama 2 Road

Bangkok: The Department of Highways is accelerating efforts to dismantle the damaged bridge structures and improve traffic management plans to minimize congestion. According to Thai News Agency, the Director-General of the Department of Highways, Mr. Piyapong Chiwatnakulpaisan, reported progress in dismantling the collapsed LG crane and concrete beams on Rama 2 Road at the M82 Motorway Section 7 construction site. The expert team has safely removed the damaged crane structure and main support beams, ensuring safe storage of the components at the site for inspection by forensic officers. Forensic engineering investigations are ongoing to determine the cause of the crane collapse. Following a joint inspection by the Department of Highways and experts from the Engineering Institute of Thailand, the contractor, ITD, has been ordered to halt work. Critical safety actions include demolishing damaged sections of the prestressed concrete box girder deck and connecting cantilever bridge structures across the Tha Ch in River. The Department of Highways has implemented a five-dimensional safety measure plan to ensure public safety during these operations. Measures include complete traffic closure in hazardous areas, machinery safety checks, replacing LG operators with certified experts, involving independent safety experts, and maintaining open public communication. The project, including the demolition and concrete pouring, is expected to be completed within 60 days. To manage traffic during this period, approximately 3 kilometers of the main road will be closed, with frontage roads remaining open. Traffic diversions will be managed in cooperation with local traffic police to minimize congestion. The Department of Highways apologizes for the inconvenience and assures that safety measures are in place to meet international standards before reopening the M82 motorway. The public is encouraged to contact the Department's hotline for further information.
