Deputy National Police Chief Oversees Investigation of Hat Yai Gold Heist

Hat yai: The Deputy National Police Chief visited the scene to follow up on the robbery of 33 baht worth of gold from a shopping mall in Hat Yai District, Songkhla Province. The perpetrator has been identified, and an expedited arrest operation has been ordered.

According to Thai News Agency, Police General Kittirat Phanphet, the Commissioner General of the Royal Thai Police, tasked Police General Thatchai Pitanilabutr, Deputy Commissioner General, to visit Koh Hong Police Station in Songkhla Province. This visit was aimed at assessing the progress of the investigation into a robbery where a lone gunman stole approximately 33 baht weight of gold necklaces from a shop in a shopping mall in Hat Yai District. High-ranking officials present included Pol. Lt. Gen. Piyawat Chalermsri, Commander of Provincial Police Region 9, and several other senior police officers who participated in a meeting and inspection of the crime scene.

The robbery took place on the evening of February 3, 2026. The suspect, described as a man in black clothing and a helmet, used a hammer to break a glass display case and steal the gold jewelry before escaping on a motorcycle towards Na Mom District. Investigators discovered a hammer, a helmet, and a sandal left at the scene, which have been collected as evidence.

Recently, law enforcement identified the suspect as a juvenile and located the motorcycle used in the crime, abandoned near a reservoir in Na Mom District. In response, Pol. Gen. Thatchai has ordered a swift pursuit and arrest of the suspect. He emphasized the importance of preventative measures, including increased patrols around high-risk establishments. Additionally, he urged cooperation with gold shop operators to enhance security measures and called for integrated efforts with the private sector and public networks to aid in maintaining public order.
