Bangkok: Warnings circulating on social media regarding the potential for diabetes medications, specifically GLP-1 receptor agonists, to cause acute optic neuropathy (NAION) and possible vision loss have been verified as true.

According to Thai News Agency, the "Sure Before Sharing" center confirmed the accuracy of these claims in consultation with Assoc. Prof. Dr. Sakchai Wongkittirak, Chairman of Academic Affairs at the Royal College of Ophthalmologists of Thailand. These medications, while effective for lowering blood sugar and aiding in weight loss, have been linked to serious side effects affecting the eyes.

The primary concern with GLP-1 receptor agonists is the risk of NAION, a condition where small blood vessels supplying the optic nerve fail, potentially due to abnormal blood vessel constriction or rapid blood sugar level drops. This can lead to optic nerve damage or inflammation, with symptoms such as reduced brightness or color fading in one eye, and in severe cases, partial visual field loss.

Despite being a rare side effect, NAION is a serious and often irreversible condition. Timely intervention, including cessation of medication, is crucial to preventing further damage. However, any existing damage to the optic nerve is usually permanent.

Ophthalmologists advise diabetic patients on GLP-1 receptor agonists to regularly monitor their vision for abnormalities and to undergo regular eye checkups. Patients are encouraged to close one eye at a time to compare vision, and to seek immediate medical attention if they notice any decrease in brightness, color distortion, or visual field loss. It is also crucial for patients to inform their doctors about their medication history for accurate diagnosis and treatment.
