“Edible Democracy” Triumphs at 31st Gourmand Awards in Riyadh

Riyadh: Making history, the book “Edible Democracy,” published by the King Prajadhipok’s Institute, clinched first place in the Food Diplomacy category at the 31st Gourmand Awards, held in Riyadh, Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. The accolade was celebrated as a significant achievement for Thailand on the global stage, emphasizing the country’s potential in leveraging food as a diplomatic tool to promote cultural understanding and democracy.

According to Thai News Agency, Mr. Issara Seriwattanavuthi, Secretary-General of the King Prajadhipok’s Institute, and Mr. Dam Buntham, Thai Ambassador to Riyadh, were present to receive the esteemed award. The Gourmand Awards, often dubbed the “World Food Oscars,” recognized “Edible Democracy” for its innovative approach in connecting democracy to everyday life through local ingredients and traditional Thai dishes. The book’s victory underscores its alignment with international standards of sustainability and creativity, reinforcing the concept that “food is a universal language.”

The Secretary-General highlighted that “Edible Democracy” was created through the initiative of the National Institute of Development Administration (NIDA) Secretary-General. The book is part of the institute’s mission to promote democracy and public participation via student civic projects. By presenting democracy in an engaging format tied to the dynamics of Thai society, the book serves as a testament to the effectiveness of using food as a means of fostering inclusive understanding worldwide.

Mr. Issara expressed that the award not only brings pride to Thailand but also motivates the institute to continue its work in strengthening Thai democracy. He noted, “This book clearly demonstrates that democracy is not a distant reality, but something we can experience every day, through food, livelihoods, opportunities, and improved quality of life, based on a transparent, accountable system that leaves no one behind.”
