Bangkok: In a recent development, the Election Commission has appointed Sarawut Benjakul to its party policy review committee, despite his ongoing investigation by the National Anti-Corruption Commission. The appointment, announced by Saeng Boonmee, Chairman of the Election Commission, is based on Sarawut's knowledge and qualifications.
According to Thai News Agency, Mr. Sarawut, who once held the position of Secretary-General of the Office of the Judiciary, is under scrutiny for his involvement in the renovation of the Phra Khanong Provincial Court building, a project valued at 42.3 million baht, along with renovations at the Taling Chan and Min Buri courts, which together exceed 134 million baht. Mr. Saeng explained that the selection process focused on individuals with diverse expertise, particularly in economics, social issues, security, and law, identifying Mr. Sarawut as a legal expert.
Mr. Saeng emphasized that the current investigation into Mr. Sarawut by the NACC does not affect his role in the committee. He stated that the Election Commission is prioritizing Mr. Sarawut's expertise and qualifications over the ongoing investigation. Mr. Saeng clarified that the appointment is about scrutinizing policy content and does not involve wielding power, which ensures that the substance of the committee's work remains unaffected.
