Bangkok: The Election Commission of Thailand reminds eligible voters who did not cast their ballots in yesterday's parliamentary elections and referendums to report their reasons for not voting. Notifications can be submitted between February 9th and 15th, 2026. For those who did not vote in the parliamentary elections, notifications can be submitted electronically via the ECT website (www.ect.go.th), the Department of Provincial Administration website (https://boraservices.bora.dopa.go.th/election/abscausess/), the "Tang Rat" application, the Smart Vote application, or by searching for "election reason notification," or in person to the district or local registrar, or by registered mail with a letter authorizing someone else to submit it on your behalf.
According to Thai News Agency, if an eligible voter fails to vote in a parliamentary election and does not notify the authorities of the reason for their inability to vote, or notifies them of a reason that is deemed invalid, their rights will be restricted. These restrictions include: filing a petition to challenge the parliamentary election results; applying for election as a Member of Parliament, a member of a local council, or a local administrator; applying for election as a Senator; applying for election as a village headman or sub-district headman; holding political or parliamentary civil service positions; and holding local administrative positions. This restriction is for a period of two years from the date of the election in which the voter failed to vote. If they fail to vote in the next election, the restriction period restarts. Any remaining time from the previous restriction period will then expire.
For those who did not vote in the referendum, reasons can be reported between February 9th and 15th, 2026. Reports can be submitted electronically via the Election Commission website (www.ect.go.th), the Department of Provincial Administration website (https://boraservices.bora.dopa.go.th/election/abscausess/), the "Tang Rat" application, the Smart Vote application, or by searching for "Referendum Voting Incident Report," or in person, by authorizing someone else to submit it on your behalf, or by registered mail.
Voters who fail to vote and do not notify the reason for their inability to vote will have their rights restricted from applying for election as a Member of Parliament (MP), a member of a local council, a local administrator, a senator, a village headman, a sub-district headman, submitting proposals to the Cabinet, holding political office, parliamentary civil service positions, and local administrator positions. This restriction is for a period of two years from the date of the vote in which the voter failed to vote. If they fail to vote again in the next vote, the restriction period for that subsequent vote will begin from the date of the new failed vote. Any remaining time from the previous restriction will then expire.
