Bangkok: The Association of Engineers has raised five points of concern regarding the collapse of the ceiling in the parliamentary cafeteria and recommends inspecting all ceilings in the building to prevent recurrence. Professor Dr. Amorn Pimanamas, President of the Structural Engineers Association of Thailand and a professor at the Faculty of Engineering, Kasetsart University, commented on the collapse of the ceiling in the B2 floor cafeteria of the Parliament building yesterday. He stated that the exact cause is still unknown, and he has identified five possible causes for the collapse.
According to Thai News Agency, the first concern involves potential problems from water leaks and moisture accumulation. The association suggests checking for water pipes, drain pipes, and air conditioning pipes above the ceiling, as leaks could lead to water accumulation, increasing the weight on the ceiling panels and eventually causing them to rot and collapse.
The second point addresses the quality of the ceiling and the strength of the fastening of the ceiling panels to the frame. The association emphasizes the importance of ensuring that ceiling panels are moisture-resistant, especially in high-humidity areas, and that the screws used for fastening are appropriate to prevent loosening and subsequent collapse.
The third concern highlights the need to inspect the installation of the ceiling panels. It is crucial to verify that the spacing between panels meets standards and that there are sufficient suspension points with correct fastening methods to support the ceiling's weight.
The fourth point examines whether there is excess weight on the ceiling from equipment or materials such as electrical wires or plumbing. Excessive weight could cause the ceiling to sag and collapse.
The fifth concern stresses the importance of regular inspection and maintenance. Ceilings in use for extended periods may show signs of moisture accumulation, such as water stains, necessitating regular checks to prevent potential collapse.
Prof. Dr. Amorn further noted that images of the collapsed ceiling do not suggest a connection to the building's main structure but indicated a likely problem with the ceiling panel system, framing, suspension system, fasteners, and water leaks. Although termites are unlikely to be the primary issue due to modern materials, they could potentially damage the ceiling covering paper, affecting the panels' structural integrity.
He urged the Parliament to re-inspect the entire building's ceiling fastening system and panel condition to prevent similar incidents. Early detection of signs such as water stains, moisture, warped panels, or loose fasteners can allow for timely repairs and avoid further damage or collapse.
