Bangkok: The Energy Regulatory Commission (ERC) has proposed two options for electricity rates for the January-April 2026 period. The options include an increase in the rate to 4.58 baht per unit or maintaining the current rate of 3.94 baht per unit.
According to Thai News Agency, the main cost of fuel has eased, leading to a downward trend in electricity prices. At the ERC meeting No. 42/2025 on November 5, 2025, it was resolved to open discussions on the variable electricity tariff (FT) for the upcoming period. The proposed options are either an increase to 4.58 baht per unit, reflecting a 16% increase and a full reimbursement to the Electricity Generating Authority of Thailand (EGAT) for absorbed costs, or maintaining the current rate of 3.94 baht per unit while gradually repaying accumulated costs.
The ERC acknowledges that global natural gas prices have been declining, and the strengthening baht has positively impacted electricity prices. These factors provide an opportunity to balance cost reduction with maintaining energy system stability. The electricity price review next year is expected to maintain current levels while addressing the financial burden on fuel for EGAT and PTT Public Company Limited.
The ERC has been repaying outstanding fuel costs to EGAT and PTT. Excess revenue refunds were used to reduce electricity bills by 12.2 billion baht between May and August 2025. Despite the decrease in outstanding costs, full reduction in tariffs has not been announced, as gradual repayment is necessary to maintain financial stability and energy security. The ERC is accepting public comments on its website from November 10-23, 2025.
In addition, progress has been made on the Direct PPA project, aimed at direct electricity trading. Criteria are being finalized and will be presented to the Energy Policy Administration Committee soon. The first Direct PPA is expected to support the large Data Center industry and begin in early 2026, with the Provincial Electricity Authority expanding transmission lines to facilitate this.
